One of the things our family enjoys is home entertainment, including
movies and TV, and to accommodate that, we've invested in electronic
components and furniture to put together a make-shift home theater in
our family room. It's a shared space, but the results are
turning out to be quite nice.

Equipment:
- Monitor
-
JVC HD-70FH97 LCoS rear projection television with the
matching stand (RK-CEXL7)
- Speakers
- Linn AV 5140
speakers for the corners, AV 5120 center speaker
- Sunfire True Subwoofer Mk II
- Components
- Denon AVR-5600 - We've had this A/V receiver since 1999
and it's been a great unit, but with the dawn of hidef and
digital video, it's time to upgrade.
- Toshiba HD-A20
HD-DVD Player (v2.2 firmware)
- DishPVR DISH Network Receiver (Model # DISHPVR508)
- XBOX 360 Elite
- Home Theater PC
Considering:
- Receivers (need to replace the aging AVR-5600 to improve
video switching - it's too hard right now)
- Integra DTR-8.8 (top contender due to the Silicon
Optix ReonHQV video processor)
- Denon 4308ci
- Denon 3808ci
- Game Consoles
- Sony Playstation 3 (good Blu-Ray player plus games to
boot)
- Nintendo Wii (lots of fun for the whole family
- HD TV Receivers
- Comments:
- I'd prefer a card for my HTPC so I could have a single
DVR, but it doesn't look like that is an option (grr).
- A downside to the current configuration (and most of
the options offered by providers) is that recorded
content can't be served to other locations. If I
could consolidate everything onto my HTPC, I could
build/buy more HTPCs for other locations and install
Beyond TV Link to stream video from the unit in the home
theater.
- DISH Network HD DVR
- Easiest move since I've been with DISH for a very long
time.
- They also seem to have one of the largest selections
of HD content.
- I'd probably have to swap out my other receivers (3 of
them) and upgrade to DISH 1000 (I'm currently got a DISH
500)
- I also need a 5th receiver.
- Upgrading to HD likely means I'll go from ~$55 to
close to $75 or more.
- Comcast HD DVR
- This would mean dropping the dish.
- Lots of HD choices and I've heard good things about
them from colleagues.
- Likely a more expensive proposition than DISH, but
maybe not.
- Verizon FiOS TV
- FiOS is being run in my neighborhood at the moment,
but TV is not yet available.
Maybe I'll get some pictures up at some point.
