Email Server Info

We host a number of Internet domains which includes web sites along with an email server.  This page contains info about setting up your machine for accessing your email stored on my email server using a web browser or using Microsoft Office Outlook.  The following information will be used for examples in the instructions below:

Using a web browser

  1. Click on this link https://www.dpotter.net/exchange.  If that doesn't work, copy that address to the Address field in your web browser.
  2. If you are presented with the following pop-up dialog box, click Yes:
  3. A page that looks like this will be displayed in your web browser:
  4. Enter the user name and password I gave you in the following form:
    User name The case of the letters is not important, but some user names will have an underscore or a dot (.) character.  Enter these with no spaces.  For our example user, John Smith could enter John.S, john.s, JOHN.S, or any other combination of case with those characters.
    Password Enter this with no spaces and with uppercase letters and lowercase letters exactly as they were given to you.  In some cases there may be one or more dot characters (.) or some other non-alphanumeric character.  Make sure you enter those exactly as they were given to you.  For our example user, John Smith would enter My#Sample exactly.
  5. If the computer you are using is your own computer (in other words, one on which you trust to have private information stored on the hard disk), click Private computer.
  6. Click Log On.

Using Microsoft Office Outlook

  1. Start Microsoft Office Outlook.  Note: These instructions were written using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003.
  2. Click the Tools menu, then click E-mail Accounts.
  3. Click Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  4. Click POP3 then click Next.
  5. Enter the information in the fields of the window as described:
    Your Name The display name for your account.   For our example user, John Smith would enter John Smith.
    E-mail Address The email address for this account as specified in my email server's address book.  For our example user, John Smith would enter John.S@DPotter.net.  In some cases a different email address could be used.  Please check with me (David) if you want to use a different email address.
    Incoming mail server (POP3) www.dpotter.net
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP) www.dpotter.net
    User Name The domain and user name for the account.  For our example user, John Smith would enter DPOTTER\John.S.
    Password Enter this with no spaces and with uppercase letters and lowercase letters exactly as they were given to you.  In some cases there may be one or more dot characters (.) or some other non-alphanumeric character.  Make sure you enter those exactly as they were given to you.  For our example user, John Smith would enter My#Sample exactly.
    Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) Check this checkbox.
  6. Click Test Account Settings.  A pop-up window will be displayed indicating that Outlook is testing access to my email server.  When this completes, click OK.
  7. If the above-executed test was successful, click the Next button and then the Finish button.  You have successfully configured Outlook to access your account on my email server.
