I finally did it!  I ordered a turnkey video editing system from DVLine.com.  Here is what I ordered:

  • ProLine Base System
  • Canopus DVStorm2 Plus
  • Asus P4Pe 845PE motherboard
  • Intel Pentium 4  2.66GHz CPU
  • 1GB Mushkin PC2700 DDR RAM
  • 120GB UltraATA 7200 RPM system drive
  • Nvidia Ti4600 128MB DualHead display adapter
  • Windows XP Professional
  • Toshiba 32/10/12/32 DVD/CDRW
  • CenDyne DVD +/- R/RW
  • SoundMAX 6.1 digital audio system

Next I added on two Western Digital 200GB UltraATA 7200RPM disks and formatted them as a dynamic spanned volume.

This was originally motivated by needing to put together a promo video for Catalyst's presentation of "No Turning Back" in 2001.  This was originally done at Cascadia College on a G4 computer with Media 100 equipment.  When I started searching, I found that there are a lot of options on the PC that can produce very good video.

My first foray into this was with Pinnacle Studio DV 7 on a machine with an ASUS A7V133 motherboard.  This worked okay, but I wanted to be able to input from and output to VHS, so I upgraded to Pinnacle Studio Deluxe 8.  Again, this worked okay, but we had to install it on a separate installation of Windows XP, and then we had trouble with audio/video sync.  We ended up having to output through the video camera to the VHS recorder.  What a pain!

I finally decided that I'd had enough, so I started looking again at Canopus DVStorm and Avid XpressDV.  I finally decided on the DVStorm.
